ABOUT THE KLX650

The Kawasaki KLX650 is a single cylinder road-trail/enduro motorcycle, produced between 1993 and 2003. The bike was initially available in two distinct guises: a fully complianced and therefore road-registerable version, with electric start (the "C" model); and a lighter, more powerful, kick start version, that was strictly for off-road use (the "A" model or KLX650R). Both models shared an almost identical 651cc, all-alloy, liquid-cooled, double overhead camshaft engine and 5-speed transmission. The A model however, was in a higher state of tune, with racier valve timing, carburettor modifications, and a less restricted exhaust system. Additionally, the A model was 26kg lighter, had a 20mm shorter wheelbase, and longer travel suspension.
For a number of years, a group of Kawasaki dealers in Australia, ably lead by Griffo's Motorcycles Cairns, had petitioned Kawasaki to produce a fully complianced version of the KLX650R. They believed that such a bike would be enormously popular in Australia, as the somewhat heavy KLX650C series was considered unviable for serious off-road use in that country, and the convenience of a road-registered KLX650R was seen as the only way sales of the KLX650 would continue.
In 1996, Kawasaki announced that year would be the last for the KLX650C, and that it would only be available in the US. The KLX650R "A" model would continue, but two versions would be sold. The new "B" model would be available in Australia only and was basically a KLX650R with better electrics and other minor modifications to enable compliance for the road in Australia. It carried a cut-down KLX650C instrument cluster (with speedometer), better lighting, flasher indicators, a number plate mount and light, and a rudimentary chain guard, attached to the frame. It was 11kg heavier than the "A" model, but still 15kg lighter than the "C" model.
In Europe and the US, the KLX650R (A model) became the "D" model, with only slight changes. These were the most successful versions of the KLX650 (especially the KLX650B series), and continued in production until 2003.
